Citric Acid

Citric acid, as an efficient chelating agent and biodegradable acid, can be used in the treatment of drinking water and industrial water. It forms stable chelates with various metal ions (such as calcium, magnesium, iron, chromium, and copper), thereby removing heavy metals from wastewater. Furthermore, it decomposes into water and carbon dioxide when broken down by microorganisms, posing no pollution to the environment.

Citric Acid Description

Citric acid is a white crystalline granule at room temperature. It exists either as an anhydrous compound or as a monohydrate. When crystallized from hot water, citric acid forms the anhydrous compound. When crystallized from cold water, it forms the monohydrate. When heated to 78 °C, citric acid monohydrate decomposes into anhydrous form. Citric acid is soluble in anhydrous ethanol at 15°C.

In industrial production, citric acid can be used as a buffer, chelating agent, metal cleaner, mordant, gelling agent, and colorant. It is widely applied in various industries including electronics, textiles, petroleum, leather, construction, plastics, foundry, and ceramics.

Citric Acid Applications

Drinking Water & Industrial Water Treatment:

Citric acid can be used for purifying drinking water and treating water for industrial production. For example, in drinking water purification processes, it can be used to prepare sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate solutions, as well as for water softening and used as a metal cleaning agent.

pH Adjustment:

In industrial water treatment, citric acid is primarily used for pH adjustment in electroplating, electroless nickel plating solutions, and electrolytic copper solutions, as well as for iron removal and manganese removal processes. Additionally, it is also used as a redox potential regulator and buffer agent.

Reducing Water Hardness:

Circulating cooling water contains a certain amount of calcium and magnesium ions, which can cause water hardness and affect equipment lifespan. In such cases, adding an appropriate amount of citric acid can reduce water hardness.

Enhancing Metal Ion Removal Efficiency:

Citric acid also functions as a pH buffer and chelating agent, thereby improving the removal efficiency of metal ions in wastewater. Meanwhile, it promotes bacterial growth and enhances the degradation efficiency of organic matter.

Sterilization and Disinfection:

When used in warm water, citric acid effectively kills bacterial spores. During the pipe cleaning process, it disinfects and sterilizes the inner surfaces of the pipes.
